The narrow street V Kotcích in the Old Prague Town is located between the Coal Market and Havelská, Melantrichova and Rytířská Streets. The name of the street V Kotcích has been derived from the fact that a huge market hall, built around 1362, used to stand there. Stalls (kotce) were attached to it on the south and on the north and these were leased to the single merchants, mainly for sale of clothing and fur goods.
The market building had been pulled down together with the stalls and then houses were built in the site. It is interesting that in the second half of the last century the business came back partially. There used to be free stalls selling cut-price goods.
Nowadays, only minimum of walkers go along the street, which is only seven meters wide, in the daytime, although the situation is completely different in the close proximity. However, in the evening and night hours the street has unique Old-Prague atmosphere.
